More IT career opportunities from Makerere University are available. The Department of Computer Science, Makerere University (Mak) has launched a PhD exchange program with The Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering, University of Washington (UW) in Seattle, USA.
The exchange program will support PhD students from Makerere University for a 1-year research visit at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA. The program will support three (3) PhD students per year for the next three years starting in the fall of 2021
What support does the program provide?
- Monthly stipend for 1-year stay in Seattle
- Equipment (laptop)
- Travel to Seattle
How many positions are available?
Three (3) positions are available for the 2021/22 academic year.
Eligibility
The scholarships are open to students who are citizens of Uganda and current PhD students in Computer Science or Software Engineering at Makerere University. If not yet admitted, candidates should have secured admission by August 2021. We prefer PhD students who are not more than 2 years into the PhD program.

Youth IDEAthon
Youth IDEAthon presents more IT career opportunities for entry-level enterprises that help to unearth and nurture creative early-stage and start-up ideas that can eventually feed into the Youth4Business Fund pipeline and could become the next generation of transformative innovative and inclusive MSMEs.
The Ideathon seeks to attract socially committed Ugandan youth, with entrepreneurial aspirations as innovators and problem solvers in a hybrid interaction and collaborative process to develop and refine their ideas for products, services and solutions that ease the way of doing things during and post-COVID 19 Pandemic. This is open to ALL disciplines.
It is a space for all passionate youth including creative designers, software developers, engineers, experts in agriculture, health among other fields to exchange ideas and work collaboratively to develop solutions. With mentorship, incubation support and hundreds of millions of seed investment to be won, the event is organized to Inspire, Skill, Build and Accelerate ideas from youth in Uganda.
Priority Sectors:
The Facility is designed to spur impact-driven entrepreneurship and engage enterprises in tackling unemployment amongst youth (defined in this call as all persons aged 18 to 35 years inclusive) resident in Uganda by leveraging innovations in selected economy sectors to create jobs and livelihood opportunities; improve quality of people’s lives and provide access to affordable finance, products and services.

- Manufacturing
- Renewable energy
- Urban Development/Smart Cities
- Information Technology (IT); and
- Creative Arts Industry
