Launched by co-founders Njavwa Mutambo, the former chief executive officer (CEO) of Musanga Logistics, and Emilie Blauwhoff, a former management consultant in February 2021,\u00a0Kibanda TopUp<\/span><\/a>\u00a0allows restaurant owners to order inventory such as grains, beverages, poultry, and beef through via app or SMS<\/a><\/span> and receive their orders the next day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Also read: Ugandan startups awarded 60,000 USD by UNCDF for outstanding innovations<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe COVID-19 pandemic outbreak in Africa was a stark reminder of how fragile Africa\u2019s food supply chains are. With half of the African population eating from largely informal restaurants daily, strengthening restaurants\u2019 supply chains is a matter of food security. We are on a mission to increase restaurants\u2019 contribution to African GDP. This means enabling restaurants with the stock and financial services they need to serve Africa\u2019s growing population,\u201d said Mutambo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Since its launch, the startup has served over 130 restaurants in Nairobi, and it has now raised US$460,000 in pre-seed funding which will be used to hire critical team members in engineering and supply chain that will enable fast growth and development of additional products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Read also: The top e-commerce startups in Africa that are worth looking out for<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n The round was led by JAM Fund, with the participation of mPharma founder and CEO Gregory Rockson, Cem Garih of Alarko Ventures, Early Berrywood Capital, and several angel investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cLocal informal restaurants are the heart of social commerce in African neighbourhoods. Kibanda Topup has a great opportunity to drive a transformation of these businesses into a formal restaurant cooperative to maximise the economic potential.
