In his address on restricting the movement of non-essential workers, President Museveni tasked the covid taskforce to work with the Ministry of Works and Transport on movement stickers for those permitted to move about. It later became clear that these essential workers can apply for travel clearance during the total lockdown online.

The Ministry of Works and Transport has now updated the public on the renewal of travel permits upon expiry. This implies that essential workers do not need to stay home, stranded, when their movement stickers expire. Here’s how to renew the permits as per the ministry’s tweet.

On the date that the movement sticker expires, the company representative that received login credentials to the clearance portal should log in. Once they log in, they should click on their company or organization application number.

The system will check the status of the application and the date that it was approved. It will then automatically renew the approval if at all the status is CLEARED. This implies that if your application is still PENDING or was REJECTED, you will not get a renewal.

Thereafter, the system will display the list of personnel in the organization, and you can then generate a PDF or make a printout of the movement stickers for each. The ministry, however, notes that the process does not apply to essential workers in the medical category.

To date, the ministry has so far approved over 24,909 travel permit applications, rejected 404 and have 5834 applications pending approval through the clearance@works.go.ug email.
