Imagine looking at a TV and seeing through it to the other side. Well that is what Xiaomi’s transparent TV the Mi TV LUX is all about. This makes the Chinese manufacturer the world’s first mass producer of transparent OLED televisions. It produced the TV as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations in 2020.

Looking at it for the first time is like looking through a window. The TV has a see through display that looks like a simple glass screen. It displays images that appear to be floating in the air.

The technology used by Xiaomi’s transparent TV.

The Mi TV LUX uses transparent organic light-emitting diode that is OLED technology (TOLED). TOLED screens use transparent components all the way through the stack that makes up the screen, and with no need for backlighting. Backlight is what brightens or dims the television display which is commonly used in LCDs (liquid crystal displays).

Most typical OLED screens use a reflective cathode layer which will prevent you from seeing through them even if the back was removed.

Xiaomi’s transparent TV has a 55 inch rectangular screen with ultra-thin width of 5.7 millimetres. The screen displays a variety of color combinations which are about 1.07 billion.

You must be wondering how the processing units are contained without a back panel. Well all that fits into the base stand of the Mi LUX TV.

There are a few concerns however when it comes to viewing. It seems the content you can view using Xiaomi’s see-through TV is quite limited and could be applicable for display in shopping windows and by event producers to set up a stage for events.

The TV costs $7200 making it one of the cheapest transparent TVs in the world but it is only available in China.

Another attempt at minimizing the impact of screens is LG’s new transparent TV unveiled on 10th January 2021. The TV’s transparent design lets you see through it even when its turned and displaying an image. The screen achieves 40 percent transparency.

LG says that the device is a home device with in built audio features and is not only made for commercial spaces as seen from previous transparent screen displays.
