If you are finding it difficult to remember what assignment or task you are supposed to do, or just can’t seem to get organised with a pen and paper then Trello is a great app for you. You need to go through the basics on how to use Trello, by the end of this blog you’ll be able to organize and prioritize projects or class assignments in a fun and flexible way. With the app, you can create a Trello board which is where you make checklists, organize a bunch of cards that come with cool features.

The beauty about Trello is you can add people to the app in case you’re doing a group project and assign everyone their roles through the app. This way, everyone is always informed and better organized about what they have to do.

First, we’ll define a few terms to make the whole journey quite easy before we go deep into the basics on how to use Trello.

Boards. This is where you organize all your projects or assignments. Each board can have lists within it and each list can have a task. For example, if you are planning for an event you can name the board “Event planning.” In the board you’ll have different lists, one list could be for the tasks you are planning to do, the second list could have the tasks you are doing now and the third could be where you put the tasks that you are done with.

Lists. The explanation for these is covered in the paragraph before. Lists are just simply what you’ll have in your board where you organize your tasks or anything else that you’d like.

Cards. For every list that you make, there’s a card. So in reference to the first example. If your list was the “to do” list for your tasks to organize an event, your cards under this list could be; call the guys for tents, pass by town to get décor, make cake booking and so on. With the cards, you can even go-ahead to add descriptions if you want.

 You can even assign a card to a member on the project team. Another cool feature with the cards is you can even add checklists to them.

Power-ups. These add useful features to your boards like the calendar view which allows you to see when your cards are due.

How to create a board.

Download the Trello app which is available on Google Play Store and App Store. Create an account or log in with your Google account. Here are some easy steps you can follow to create a board in Trello.

  • Under personal boards click the box that says Create new board.
  • Give the board a title. You can also choose a background color or pattern.
  • If you have teams, select which team you want to give access to the board.

If you don’t have a team you can set one up by adding members to your board one at a time with these simple steps.

  • Open the Trello board from your home page.
  • Along the top of the board on the left side of the page, click the Share button.
  • Find users by entering their email address or Trello username. You can also create a link that you can send to someone.
  • Once you’ve entered all the names of the members you want to add, click Send Invitation.

Now you can easily assign tasks to members and have conversations in the comments section.

How to create lists in Trello.

After setting up your board, and adding your team members you can proceed to create lists. To start organizing, you can have three lists like “To do”, “Doing” and “Done”.

  • Open the board where you want to create a list. Under the name of the board, click Add list.
  • Give your list a name and click Add list.
  • At the bottom of your lists, you’ll now have a button to add cards.

How to create Cards in Trello.

Next, you add some cards to your list. There are a lot of options when it comes to cards but you only need the basics.

  • At the bottom of your list, click Add a card.
  • Enter a title for the card.
  • Click Add card.
  • When you click on a card, you can add a description or comments for everyone on the team to see.
  • You can also add a checklist, labels and attachments from this screen.

How to assign cards in Trello and give them due dates.

If you are working with a team, you’ll want to make everyone’s tasks much easier by assigning them cards showing what they are supposed to do. When a team member is assigned a card, they’ll get notifications when someone makes a comment on the card or when a due date is soon approaching.

Follow these steps.

  • Click on the card you want to assign users to.
  • On the right side of the card, click the Members button.
  • Search for users on your team, and click each one to add them.
  • Next you’ll want to add due dates to the cards.
  • Click on the card you want to add a due date to.
  • On the right side of the card, click Due Date.
  • Select a due date from the calendar tool, add a time, and click Save.

Some shortcuts you can use in Trello.

After you’ve grasped the basics on how to use Trello, you can make things much easier with shortcuts. Here are some useful keyboard shortcuts you can use.

B: Opens the boards menu. from here you can search and switch between vatious boards.

I: Opens the search box. From here you cam search your cards and lists to jump straight to the card you want.

F: Opens the filter dialog box. From here you can filter out cards by keywords, labels, members, or due date.
