The Wanting Mare is a very fascinating, epoch-like tale set in a setting close to our own in a distant universe. The film is located in the city of Whitren, a coastal town on the distant planet of Anmaere, where wild horses are caught annually to be transported to windy Levithen. Set in the centre of the city, it follows a line of women who are plagued by the illusion of a long lost — presumably better — history. You can stream it on Amazon, Apple, Vudu, Vimeo.

The first woman of Asian origin to lead a significant Hollywood franchise holder, Birds of Prey director Cathy Yan, made history last year. However, Yan’s debut in 2018, Dead Pigs, has only been made available to Western audiences recently through Mubi, despite its increasingly popular presence. Yan follows a series of off-beat characters including one down-and-out pig farmer, one busboy, one jaded affluent female, and an ex-pat architect as their lives interwoven and converge as a flood of pork carcasses floats across The Yangtze River and is ever closer to Shanghai. A quest for intergeneration disputes in a highly status-driven culture.
